KARAKTERISASI DENSITAS METIL ESTER MELALUI PENGARUH PENINGKATAN RASIO KATALIS ZEOLIT/KIO3

Abstract


Density is one of the characteristics that must be met in order that an ester product can be classified as having diesel fuel properties. The density of biodiesel according to SNI 04-7182-2006 standard standard is at 850-890 (kg/m3). Triglyceride as the raw material of methyl ester decreasing density through transesterification reaction.This density decrease enables methyl ester to be used as alternative fuel. The density value is strongly influenced by the amount of ester content in the compound. The faster a reaction progresses, the more ester becomes possible. One of the factors that can be used to speed up the reaction is the type of catalyst. In this study, the density of methyl ester was engineered using a transesterification reaction using a zeolite / K heterogeneous catalyst. The zeolite / KIO3 ratio varies from 2.5%; 5.0%; 7.5%; 10% and 12.5% (w / w) of the weight of triglycerides. Triglycerides used are crude palm oil which has the content of medium to long fatty acid fat that is very potential to be used as a raw material. Triglycerides are converted to methyl esters by transesterification reaction with zeolite / KIO3 as heterogeneous catalysts. As the reaction control is carried out the reaction using zeolite and non zeolite. From the research results, it is known that the density of methyl ester for zeolite / KIO3 catalyst is at 887 kg / m3-823 kg / m3. This density value has met SNI standard standard SNI 04-7182-2006. The resulting methyl ester product was confirmed using gas chromatography to determine the amount of methyl ester contained in the product.
