Karakterisasi dan uji efektivitas arang bambu sebagai filter asap rokok

Abstract


The objective of this research was to investigate the bamboo charcoal characteristics and its effectiveness as a cigarette smoke filter. The research stages consist of pyrolisis, characterization and effectiveness test of bamboo charcoal as cigarette smoke filter. The treatments were type of bamboo charcoal namely Andong and Betung and particle size (40, 60 and 80 mesh). Characterization was based on benzene, chloroform and iodium adsorption, while effectiveness as cigarette smoke filter was based on tar and nicotine adsorption. The results showed bamboo charcoal Andong gave a higher iodium and nicotine adsorption compare to bamboo charcoal Betung. Iodium adsorption of bamboo charcoal Andong and Betung which 60 mesh size were 18.72% and 12.57% respectively. While cigarette filter added with bamboo charcoal Andong and Betung could increase nicotine adsorption up to 45% and 19% respectively. Particle size of Bamboo charcoal Andong and Betung had the similar effect on the tar and nicotine adsorption. The lower the particle size the higher the effectiveness.

Abstrak

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti karakteristik arang bambu dan efektivitasnya sebagai penyaring asap rokok. Tahap penelitian meliputi pirolisis, karakterisasi dan pengujian efektivitas arang bambu sebagai filter asap rokok. Perlakuan yang diterapkan adalah jenis arang bambu Andong dan Betung serta ukuran partikel arang bambu 40, 60, dan 80 mesh. Karakterisasi arang bambu didasarkan pada uji daya serap benzene, khloroform dan yodium, sedangkan kemampuan penyerapan asap rokok didasarkan pada uji penyerapan tar dan nikotin. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan arang bambu Andong memiliki daya serap yodium dan nikotin yang lebih baik dibanding arang bambu Betung. Arang bambu Andong dan betung 60 mesh memiliki daya serap yodium masing-masing sebesar18,72% dan 12,57%. Sementara filter rokok yang ditambah arang bambu Andong dan Betung dapat meningkatkan penyerapan nikotin masing-masing sebesar 45% dan 19%. Sedangkan untuk penyerapan benzene, khloroform, dan tar jenis arang bambu Andong dan Betung tidak memberikan pengaruh yang berbeda. Ukuran partikel arang bambu Andong dan Betung memberikan pengaruh yang sama terhadap daya serap tar dan nikotin. Semakin kecil ukuran partikel semakin efektif penyerapan tar dan nikotin.
